Coursework and subjects included in the program’s training and its competency evaluation:
- Communication skills, including the ability to read, write, and make brief and accurate reports
(oral, written, or electronic). - Observation, reporting, and retaining records of an individual’s status and activities providedto the individual.
- Reading and recording an individual’s temperature, pulse, and respiration.
- Basic infection control.
- Basic elements of body functioning and changes in body function that should be reported to a PCA supervisor.
- Maintaining a clean, safe, and healthy environment, including house cleaning and laundry, dusting furniture, sweeping, vacuuming, and washing floors; kitchen care (including dishes, appliances, and counters), bathroom care, emptying and cleaning beside commodes and urinary catheter bags, changing bed linens, washing inside window within reach from the floor, removing trash, and folding, ironing, and putting away laundry.
- Recognition of emergencies, knowledge of emergency procedures, and basic home safety.
- The physical, emotional, and developmental needs of individuals, including privacy and respect for personal property.
- Appropriate and safe techniques in personal hygiene and grooming including bed, tub, shower, and partial bath techniques; shampoo in sink, tub, or bed; nail and skin care; oral hygiene; toileting and elimination; safe transfer and ambulation; normal range of motion and positioning; and adequate nutrition and fluid intake.
- Meal preparation and nutrition planning, including special diet preparation; grocery purchase, planning, and shopping; and errands such as picking up prescriptions.
Hands On Training
This is a Blended class, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on skills session.
Students must first complete Online on the American Red Cross website. Once completed, the student will receive a Certificate of completion for the online portion. That certificate must be presented at the time of the hands-on session in order to obtain final certification. Students must then enroll in an instructor-led skill session within 90 days of completing the online course.
The Training You Need
Medication Administration Classes I, II, III & Renewals
This series of courses are designed to teach unlicensed Developmental Disability personnel (DD) how to safely administer medication at various settings authorized by law and courses are taught by trained Registered Nurses.
Medication Administration I
14-hour course designed to teach how to prepare, administer and document the performance of the 13 health-related activities (HRAs) and the administration of prescribed oral, topical, and inhaled medications, and application of topical over-the-counter medications for musculoskeletal comfort.
Two-hour renewal course offered
Medication Administration II
4-hour course designed to provide DD personnel the educational basis to receive nursing delegation for feeding and medication administration per Stable Labeled Gastrostomy / Jejunostomy (G / J) tubes, including understanding the equipment and procedure for feeding and medication administration per (G / J) tube, the placement of G / J tubes, site care and maintenance of these tubes.
1-hour renewal courses are offered
Medication Administration III
A 4-hour course designed to teach the signs, symptoms, and management of diabetes, and administering, and documentation of subcutaneous insulin injections.
1-hour renewal course offered
PREREQUISITES:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold a high school diploma or a general education development certificate (GED).
- Currently employed by DD Agency/DDOD Certified independent provider
- Completed all Background check requirement in accordance with OAC 5123:2-2-02 including results and registry checks within the specified time frames
- Complete the state-required forms at least 24-hours prior to the course and send them to the instructor. Forms can be downloaded and printed here: Ohio department of disability form.
Life Saving Training
Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED course equips students with the knowledge necessary to recognize and care for a variety of first aid, breathing, and cardiac emergencies involving adults, children, and infants.This course is approved by the American Red Cross, offered in person and meets OSHA requirements for workplace.
After successful completion of this course, students receive a valid 2 year Red Cross digital certificate that is OSHA compliant and meets other workplace and regulatory requirements.
